11) Identify the elements of a print-based advertisement (such as headline, illustration, copy, signature, or logo) and analyze their relationship to the principles of effective advertising design (e.g., balance, color, proportion).

What is it about print ads that get your attention?
Color?  Clever or funny headlines, pictures?

Think of a print advertisement (from a favorite magazine etc.,) that you remember or that caused you to make a purchase?  Describe it on your own paper.  (was it promotional or institutional?  that's a throwback from our last lesson:)

Read pages 467-475 in your text.

What tips does the reading give about headlines?  
Words to use? 
How should it affect the reader?

Work with a partner to create 1 headline for 1 product and 1 service

What is copy?
What tips should be used when creating copy?


Apply It!

Study the elements of  the illustration on page 470.

  • Create a print advertisement for 1 product or service on a full sheet of paper.  
  • If the company has a slogan like "just do it" you can use that but you must create your own everything else.  
  • Do not look on the internet for inspiration, just use your mind.
  • Label each of the elements similar to the example on page 470.

Activity 2

Select a full-page ad from a provided magazine.  Use the provided copy paper to label parts of the ad.

  • Trace the headline
  • Create a copy block for the copy.  Label the copy tips used from page 473
  • Trace the outline of the illustration.
  • Trace the signature 
  • Trace the slogan and indicate the eye-catching technique used from page 475 (alliteration, paradox, rhyme, pun, or play on words)
